Spectator apologies to Jim Clark Rally drivers for going into labour

THE spectator who went into labour as the cars sped past during the Jim Clark Rally has issued an apology to drivers for holding them up. In a separate incident, some residents had to be evacuated from their homes after a car struck a gas main.

The rally had to be delayed after the first stage had been completed on Friday while an ambulance was called into the stage and whisked the Duns woman away to hospital.

Gwen Richardson went into false premature labour seven weeks early and was taken by ambulance to Borders General Hospital.

She said: “I am now back home, and my husband Kevin and I would like to thank everyone for their help and concern. The ambulance crew, stewards friends and neighbourghs could not have done more to help, and i also apologise to the rally drivers for the delay.”

During stage eight of the Reivers Rally, Eccles was stopped after a gas main was hit by a competitor’s Landrover.

Some residents had to be evacuated as a precaution in the village, but no-one was injured and work to repair the damage began right away.

Overall, however, the rally was deemed to be a great success. Rally manager Colin Pagan said: “Thank you to the marshals for all their hard work. Thank you to the spectators for all their support. A successful and enjoyable event had by all.”
