Sonic boom shakes Berwick
An F16 fighter jet can create a rapid condensation of water vapour around the fuselage due to sonic shock produced at sub-sonic speed.
THE RAF have confirmed that a Tornado jet caused a sonic boom off the Northumberland coast on Thursday afternoon, (January 12).
An RAF spokesman said: “The RAF can confirm that a single Tornado GR4 from RAF Lossiemouth completed a pre-planned supersonic run off the coast of Northumberland during a sortie to RAF Marham in Norfolk.
“The supersonic element of the flight was conducted in accordance with RAF flying training rules, which state that aircraft should be more than 10 miles from the coast. “Any inconvenience caused to local residents is regretted.”
The sonic boom occurred at 3.15pm, and caused buildings in coastal towns from Eyemouth to as far south as Craster to shake. It also affected some towns and villages inland, including Belford and Alnwick.
Vicar of Berwick, Canon Alan Hughes said: “I was standing outside the vicarage and the next thing I knew people were piling out the Church of Scotland and doors were rattling and people were coming out their houses and offices.”
Canon Hughes added: “It shook me to the core.”
Shortly after it happened, a Northumbria Police spokesman said that reports had flooded from people who had felt the earth shaking.
