LAFARGE Tarmac’s Dunbar Works was recently selected to take part in an international project to show how environmental performance can be improved by developing constructive working relationships between industry, regulators and local communities.

Thanks to collaboration between Lafarge Tarmac and the Environment Agency, the site hosted two specialists from Africa for a week as part of the prestigious Commonwealth Fellowship scheme.

Jared Kokach, optimisation manager at Bamburi Cement Ltd in Kenya – part of the Lafarge Group – and Azziz Abbu, senior environmental management officer at the National Environmental Management Council in Tanzania – the African equivalent of SEPA (Scottish Environment Protection Agency) - were particularly interested in sustainability initiatives being undertaken by the Works.

These included the progressive approach to quarry restoration, the way emissions are monitored and calibrated independently and how waste-based materials, such as tyre chips, are used in cement-making.

Environmental coordinator for the Works, Sharon Gardner, oversaw the visit; she said the visitors were also interested in how the Works’ liaison committee operated and in the signs around the Works encouraging staff to share their ideas – welcome ideas they plan to explore further in their respective organisations.

She said: “It was a real pleasure to welcome Jared and Azziz on site. Whilst the overall aim is to present our local experiences to them, we also found it interesting to hear about the relationship between industry and regulators in Kenya and Tanzania. Everyone learns from exchanges such as these.”
