GLASGOW RANGERS have condemned “inappropriate” chanting from their supporters during the team’s 3-1 win against Berwick Rangers at Shielfield Park.

Television microphones picked up an outbreak of sectarian chanting during the first half of the Scottish third division tie on Saturday, forcing broadcaster ESPN to issue an apology.

Two people were arrested on suspicion of sectarian chanting during the lunch-time match, and Rangers issued a statement before the end of the sell-out game, saying the club was “disappointed” by outbursts of inappropriate singing by a section of the support at Berwick.

A spokesman for Rangers said: “Our fans have been excellent this season both home and away and we do not want to see this tarnished.”

Rangers manager Ally McCoist added: “We don’t need it, within the club or Scottish football.”

Northumbria police said it would fully investigate reports of sectarian chanting and that video footage was being reviewed.

But the force praised the majority of the 4,200 supporters that attended the match. Superintendent Paul Orchard said: “I’d like to praise the majority of fans who were mainly good natured and only interested in action on the pitch. Both sets of fans were in good spirits and enjoyed the occasion. Despite this, we have received reports that some sectarian chanting did take place and these will be investigated fully.”

A third person was arrested during the course of the game on suspicion of possession of drugs.
