SBC looks for recruits for new Shared Lives care scheme

Scottish Borders Council has launched a recruitment drive for carers who would be interested in joining Shared Lives Short Breaks, a new and developing service that provides flexible breaks for adults who need some support due to disabilities, health or becoming older.

The Shared Lives Short Breaks scheme is a way to have a break where a trained Shared Lives carer provides support and accommodation from his or her own home. It gives people in receipt of social work services the opportunity to have a break from their normal routine, develop new friendships and widen their range of social interests.

The breaks can be for a few hours or overnight, either on a regular or occasional basis.

Family carers also benefit from the scheme as they are given a break from their caring role and the chance to spend time pursuing their own interests.

Shared Lives Carers are recruited, assessed and trained by the council’s Shared Lives Short Breaks team. Ongoing support from the team is also available. Carers work on a self-employed basis, being paid for the hours of care that they provide, with the flexibility of fitting the breaks around their family and work commitments.

Andrew Lowe, SBC’s Director of Social Work said: “We are looking for caring and enthusiastic people who can offer breaks in their own homes for individuals who may need physical, social, personal and emotional support.

“We want to hear from people who are interested in providing a personalised, flexible service which includes building a relationship with the person they are caring for and finding ways that they can spend time together that they can both benefit from.”
