Record breaking summer rainfall figures confirmed

Flooding on Spittal Main Street at the end of June.

THE summer of 2012 will go down as the wettest on record in north Northumberland - no matter what happens for the rest of this month.

A staggering 428.9mm of rain was recorded at Letham Shank Farm, near Berwick in May, June and July. A breakdown of the figures also shows there has been no let-up in the rain with 96.9mm falling in May, 166.9mm in June and 165.1mm in July.

The rainfall for the three month period easily tops the 326mm recorded at Letham Shank in 1998, the previous highest. Even when the August total is added to the figure it only comes out at 373mm - well behind what has already fallen in this soggy summer of 2012 with another three weeks to go.

The rain has had a big impact on many tourism providers, with families opting to take holidays abroad and missing out on day trips to local attractions. Not only that, there have been lots of other competing attractions this year such as the Olympics and Queen’s Diamond Jubilee which have tempted people to stay at home.

It has left many tourism-related businesses hoping for a let-up in the rain for the remainder of the school holidays so they can make the most of what is left of the summer.
