Quiet Bonfire Night for Borders firefighters

GOING against the trend for the whole of the Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service area, crews in the Borders had a relatively quiet bonfire night this year with no major incidents to report.

As expected fire crews and control room staff were very busy, processing 396 calls on November 5 and 1039 calls from October 31 during what is the service’s busiest time of year.

But pleasingly attacks on firefighters were down from 12 incidents last year to two incidents in the same period this year.

Group Commander William Allison commented: “Throughout the Scottish Borders over the bonfire period the fire and rescue service attended a small number of calls none of which proved to be of a significant nature in relation to bonfire activities.

“It was pleasing to see the increase in locally organised events where bonfire and firework displays were properly supervised.

“This and working closely with our partners in the Police and the local authority, coupled with the support we received from members of the public has undoubtedly contributed to the low number of calls received. On behalf of the Fire Service within the Scottish Borders I would personally like to thank everyone involved.”
