Pupils to put best feet forward

SIX thousand Borders primary school pupils are set to take to their feet to support Walk to School Month.

Each October, children from across the UK join forces with over 40 countries worldwide to celebrate the benefits of walking to school.

Some schools are asking parents to ditch their cars for the whole month while others are choosing to do it over one week. If a journey is too far to walk, the message is to drive part of the way and walk the rest - keeping the school gate area clear of traffic.

All children taking part will receive a certificate. This year primary 4-7 pupils will also receive their own ‘Puttin’ Your Foot Down’ booklet which is full of features, puzzles and links to relevant websites.

Karen McGrath, School Travel Co-ordinator said: “Walking to school is a brilliant way of working towards our recommended 60 minutes of physical activity per day. We would love everyone who normally does the school run to try walking or ‘park and stride’.”
