Pupils spend night under the stars raise funds for Peru trip
Duns & Eyemouth Schools gather at Berwickshire High School to raise money for Peru trip.
WHAT would you do if you had to sleep out overnight without a proper roof over your head?
That was the question 40 pupils set out to answer at the weekend, as fundraising for Eyemouth, Earlston and Berwickshire High Schools’ 2013 trip to Peru, with the Vine Trust continued apace with a sponsored 14 mile “bedpush” from Duns to Eyemouth, followed by an overnight sleep out.
The whole procession was headed by David Phelps, PC Medic, in his bright yellow car and the bed in question was created by John Thorburn of Duns.
In the first leg of the journey the pupils walked and pushed the bed to Chirnside where they enjoyed packed lunches and trays of cakes courtesy of the Beacon Cafe.
Between Chirnside and Ayton the group was promptly stopped at the roadside by Jude Gardner who brought down sweets, fruit and a cheque.
In Ayton, tea and home-made tray bakes were kindly donated and served by Ayton SWRI to the now weary but still cheerful group.
Upon arriving in Eyemouth, they were piped into the town in style by Sandy Mutch and made their way to Eyemouth Baptist Church where work began in haste to construct their overnight cardboard shelters in the car park. These were a variety of shapes and sizes, some notably more successful than others!
After all the hard work was done, everyone headed down for tea where they enjoyed delicious sausages and chips, courtesy of Giacopazzis.
The cold, wet and windy overnight weather gave them a taste of living without the security of a comfortable and secure home similar to the living conditions that many of the children they will encounter on their trip to Peru have experienced.
After a long night, breakfast was welcomed by all and generously donated by Eyemouth Baptist Church.
At present, the estimated total raised is just over £8,000, which is an amazing achievement.
The youngsters would like to thank all those who contributed to making the event such a success, including those who freely donated to them, both money and food, as they passed along the way.

Berwickshire High School pupils would also like to thank Duns Parish Church for allowing them to hold a coffee morning on Saturday, September 8 and they extend their appreciation to all the people from Duns and the surrounding areas who came along and supported them with their donations and by buying cakes and coffee!
