Police to host Borders wildlife seminar

LOTHIAN and Borders Police will host a special wildlife seminar in the Scottish Borders to discuss a range of legislation changes and other issues.

The event, which takes places within the lecture theatre of the Scottish Borders College in Galashiels on Wednesday, February 6, is open to all members of the public and is free to attend.

However, officers are particularly keen for rural workers such as farmers, gamekeepers, stalkers and land managers to attend and ensure they are up to date in relation to licensing amendments.

Changes to the use of traps and snares along with the current status of general licenses and rural security will be discussed during a series of presentations.

General Licences, which came out on January 1, differ from the one in previous years and will be explained by Kenny Willmitt from British Association of Shooting and Conservation.

Dr Ben Ross from Scottish Natural Heritage will also be on hand to talk about the work of SNH and explain the licensing system they operate, while David McKie, a solicitor with Levy and Macrae, will give a talk on vicarious liability.

Superintendent Andrew Allan, Lothian and Borders lead on wildlife crime said: “Those working on the land make up a large part of the workforce in Midlothian and East and West Lothian as well as the Scottish Borders and as such, we are keen for as many as possible to attend this very worth while seminar.

“The changes to legislation can have significant impacts upon existing working practises and it is important these changes are recognised and adopted by those who work in the countryside.
