Police identify couple killed in A697 crash

POLICE have named the married couple who were killed in a crash just south of Carfraemill on Sunday, December 23 as Derek and Avril Peoples from Kelso.

At approximately 2.45pm a two vehicle collision occurred on the A697 Greenlaw to Carfraemill road approximately one mile south of the junction with the A68 at Carfraemill.

As a result 53 year old Derek and 51 year old Avril sustained fatal injuries.

Two other people from the second car sustained lesser injuries and were taken to the new Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

The road was closed for seven hours to facilitate scene investigation.

The accident occurred less than a day before another fatal crash, this time on the A68 approximately a mile and a half south of Pathhead.

A Nissan Note travelling northbound was involved in a collision with a Skoda Octavia being driven in the opposite direction. The three back seat passengers of the Nissan, who all died at the scene.

They have now been identified as Buddhist monks Phramaha Chai Boonma (36); Phramaha Pranom Thongphaiboon (43) and Phramaha Kriangkrai Khamsamrong (35).

The driver and front seat passenger were taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment to their injuries as was the male driver of the Skoda, although he did not suffer any serious injury.

Police are still investigating the accident and anyone with information is asked to contact them.
