WITH spring still a way off and early mornings and nights not showing signs of getting lighter anytime soon, Lothian and Borders Police are prioritising the safety of Berwickshire’s young paper boys and girls.

Operation Glowworm has seen officers based at Duns Police Station working together with local newsagents, the Berwickshire Community Safety Panel and Border Embroideries, who have produced high visability vests for the youngsters to wear while they’re on their rounds.

PC Steven Dickson commented: “One of the Policing Priorities in the Scottish Borders is reducing road casualties.

“As well as tackling speeding and other traffic related offences we need to address issues such as making sure our young folk are safe when they are out and about during the darker winter mornings and evenings.

“The most effective way of doing this is ensuring that they are more visible whether they are out on foot, bikes or scooters.

“We will be speaking with these youngsters and offering advice such as ensuring that they use bike lights as well.”

Tresurer of the Community Safety Panel, Councillor Frances Renton said it was “vitally important” for the welfare of the paper boys and girls to be prioritised while they were carrying out their duties in their local communities and Chirnside newsagent Gillian Renton said with a lot of traffic passing through different parts of the village when people travel to work and school in the morning, it was “essential that youngsters could be seen.”

The first paper boys to try on the new vests said they were pleased to receiving them as their 7am starts meant they were going about their rounds in the dark in some areas that weren’t well lit.
