Old Polwarth settlement suggested for new housing

MARCHMONT Farms Ltd and Smith & Garrett Rural Asset Management want land between the old Polwarth village hall to be considered for future residential purposes.

In responding to Scottish Borders Council’s recent public consultation of the proposed Local Plan for the region they are asking the council to consider development of the “old settlement at Polwarth”.

However, council planners say that the site doesn’t have a settlement boundary and there are already “sufficient housing land options” in the Berwickshire housing market area without the need for new settlement boundaries.

They go on to add that the land had previously been rejected by a Scottish Government Reporter “as completion of existing planning permissions will result in saturation point” and the isolated community would have no services.

Planners recommended that Scottish Borders Council does not include the Polwarth site as a development area within the Local Development Plan, and when councillors met last week they accepted this view.

The next consultation phase of the Local Plan will re-open in spring next year.
