New fishing shiel needed to help fulfil potential of River Tweed

PLANS to upgrade a fishing shiel near Coldstream Bridge to help fulfil the angling potential of that stretch of the River Tweed have been submitted.

The Tillmouth and Tweed Salmon Fishing LLP has lodged the application with Northumberland County Council.

The proposed facility, south east of the bridge, would offer toilet and kitchen facilities, a rest area, full access and improved parking nearby.

A report to the council by Sale and Partners, on the applicant’s behalf, states: “The sport of fishing on the River Tweed contributes greatly to the income generated by the tourist industry in the area.

“The Tillmouth and Tweed Salmon Fishing LLP continue to promote this ‘primary beat’ and wish to fulfil the potential of the site for fishing purposes.

“The site is one of the few that does not suffer from seasonal flooding and is accessible for the whole of the salmon fishing season (Feb 1 to Nov 30).

“Upgrading of the existing facilities are viewed as critical to attracting users to the site, and to the continued development of daily and weekly lettings.”

The existing access to the site from the A697 would be retained but tree felling would be required to carry out proposed improvements to parking arrangements which the applicant says are needed to cater for both the boatmen and fishermen which could be some 12 rods on any day.

The building would be located next to the existing hut which would be retained for secure storage. It would be set back from the river bank but would have views down the river and up to Coldstream Bridge.

The shiel would be constructed as a timber framed single storey building clad externally in natural stone to help it blend into the woodland background.
