A DUNBAR photographer was among the prizewinners in the Butterfly Conservation Scotland’s first ever photo competition.

The competition drew an amazing response, with 234 entries from 54 members and Dunbar’s Malcolm Quirie won the bonus prize for a photo that captures why we like butterflies.

A stunning image of a Small Copper at Musselburgh lagoons taken by Fiona Govan from Dalkeith claimed first prize of a Garden Nature Nest Box Camera.

The short list of 20 pictures included 12 butterflies and eight moths. While the butterfly pictures illustrated their beauty, the moth shots showed how strange and bizarre some of these intriguing creatures can seem .

Organiser Amanda Wilson said; “I was astounded by the large quantity of excellent photographs we received and it’s clear there are a lot of talented amateur photographers amongst our membership. The photographs will now tour exhibition spaces to allow others to appreciate the wonderful moths and butterflies that have been photographed.”

The photographs will be on display at Edinburgh Zoo
