Libraries closed as integration work begins

AT the end of last year, Scottish Borders Council agreed to integrate library and contact centre facilities in six towns across the region and Duns and Coldstream are first in line.

Following public consultation, designs for five of the sites were finalised and a tender was carried out to select a contractor to carry out the construction work. The contract has been awarded and work is due to begin in Duns and Coldstream on Monday, October 22.

From this date Duns and Coldstream libraries will be closed while the internal layouts are changed to allow the improved delivery of library and customer services functions and transactions.

New reception desks will be fitted, interview facilities created and new shelving layouts put in place. In Duns, space will also be created to accommodate the registrars service.

Although the libraries in both towns will be closed during this period the contact centres and registrars offices will remain open for business as usual. The work is due to be completed by mid-December.

While the library is closed a mobile service will be provided in each town. The mobile will visit Duns between two and four times a week and will be located in Duns Square.

It will visit Coldstream between one and three times a week and will be in Victoria Street. Full details are available on the council website at scotborders.gov.uk/libraryarrangements

Councillor Vicky Davidson, Executive Member for Culture, Sport and Community Learning said: “By bringing libraries and contact centres together, SBC has ensured the full range of services will continue to be delivered locally. I’m sure the new integrated facilities will serve the local communities well for years to come.”
