‘Lack of ambition’ shown by government on A1 dualling

EAST Lothian’s transport chief has expressed disappointment at the Scottish Government’s “lack of ambition” on dualling the A1 road between Dunbar and the English border.

Councillor Michael Veitch, East Lothian Council’s transport spokesman, wrote to Scottish Transport Minister Keith Brown to make the case for the route to be upgraded to dual carriageway and ask if the government planned to carry out the work.

But Mr Brown replied saying that the government’s Strategic Transport Projects Review “found that this corridor enjoys relatively safe, efficient transport operations and experiences few journey time reliability issues, despite some capacity constraints and congestion points” and that “the review recommends route management measures on the A1...and safety standards rather than full dualling from Dunbar to the border”.

Mr Veitch said: “I welcome the fact that the Scottish Government is examining safety measures on the A1 such as realigning sections of the road and junction improvements, however, I believe this falls woefully short of what is required. I am convinced that nothing less than the full dualling of the A1 between Dunbar and the English border is required if we are serious about reducing the accidents which the government’s own figures have revealed.”
