The Diamond Jubilee celebrations proved a busy time for the Greenlaw Festval Trust and their Greenlaw beacon was a roaring success.

As one of 4,000 beacons around the Commonwealth it was a wonderful sight up on Catmoss overlooking the village as the sky was lit with fireworks, sky lanterns and a truly immense beacon which the volunteers had taken days to build.

The site was chosen as it was only 100 yards from the site of the beacon which celebrated Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1887.

There was a great turnout of Greenlaw townsfolk of all ages who had brought picnics which were enjoyed by the heat of the truly hearty fire.

Three cheers were raised for the Queen to celebrate the event which will be remembered for years to come by all those who attended.

The Greenlaw beacon was lit at 10.15pm by Greenlaw Maid Hannah Hay, Peter Leggate DL, Colin Canning of Reivers 4x4, Greenlaw Festival Trust chair Helen Johnston and vice-chair Stuart Whitton.

Greenlaw Festival Trust secretary Fiona Drewery said: “This could not have been achieved without the community all pulling together (literally) and our thanks go to all the volunteers, to David Cochrane and the White family for the use of Catmoss, to Mr Trotter and Flannagin’s skips for the wood, to Mr Harper Gowe for the fireworks and Stuart Whitton for the Lanterns and thanks to everyone who came for making it a wonderful evening to remember. It was a great lead up to the Greenlaw Festival which commences on Friday, June 22.”

Greenlaw also celebrated the Jubilee as a community when all children, P7 age and under (including a baby not yet born) who live in Greenlaw or go to Greenlaw Primary School, were each gifted a commemorative £5 Diamond Jubilee coin. The Greenlaw Festival Trust, Greenlaw School and PTA, the Memorial Hall, Greenlaw Bowling Club, Blackadder Masonic Lodge and Greenlaw Football Club all contributed to the fund.
