Borders College was delighted to win the International Award at the 2012 SQA Ceremony, held on 9th November at Anniesland College, Glasgow.

BORDERS College won the International Award at the 2012 SQA ceremony held in Glasgow hosted, by media personality Kaye Adams.

The evening rewards and recognises inspirational achievements and commitment from individuals, schools, colleges and training organisations across Scotland. Amidst 34 finalists, covering 11 different categories of success, Borders College competed for the International Award with two other training organisations.

With funding through the Leonardo da Vinci Mobility Programme, LLP, Borders College has over the last nine years been successful in developing international links and partnerships and has developed a programme of activity that gives students the opportunity to enhance their learning experience by enabling them to train and learn in another country in new and innovative environments through work experience with a host employer.

Lynn Retallick, external funding manager, and Andy Winwood, programme leader, picked up the award on behalf of Borders College. Lynn commented

“The success of the programme is down to staff commitment to the learner experience and the wonderful generosity and willing co-operation of our international partners without whom the programme would not operate.”

The project started with six gamekeeping students undertaking placements on a sporting estate in Sweden and has blossomed into a college wide project involving landbased industries, rugby development, childcare, access students with special needs, hair and beauty, sport coaching, agriculture and equine management.

Over 250 students and 30 partners, educational, commercial and private organisations, in six different countries (Sweden, Belgium, France, Norway, Ireland and Spain) have participated and benefitted from international placements. Development is ongoing with the construction department becoming involved this year and new partners in Germany and Portugal.

The benefits the programme brings contributed to Borders College achieving highest overall success rate in the SFC (Scottish Funding Council) College Performance Indicators 2010-11.
