THE high winds and heavy rain that lashed the Borders last night caused chaos on the region’s roads.

Scottish Borders Council were quick to publicise the Met Office’s ‘AMBER’ warning on Monday, which warned people to be prepared for the adverse conditions, and put the area on flood alert.

There were no fewer than five flood warnings given out, including the road between Greenlaw andAllanton.

Drivers on other roads were also reporting excess water making journeys difficult or even impossible.

Council staff worked through Monday night and into Tuesday morning to clear as much debris as possible and keep raods open.

To the west, a fallen tree blocked traffic between Leithom and Orange Lane. Fallen treees and other debris also halted traffic between Duns and Cranshaw.

The Duns - Berwick road was reported flooded at the outskirtsof Chirnside, in front of the Primary School.

While Borders schools remained open, rough weather partially affected school bus services, particularly the K13 service which usually runs through Morebattle, where the B6401 to Kalemouth was closed.

The B13 service from Swintonmill crossroads to Berwickshire High was also prevented from picking up children in Coldstream.

Larger roads in and out of the area were not spared. There were many reports of dangerous high winds and debris slowing traffic north of Coldstream, while traffic on the A1 was slowed almost to a halt.
