Help continues for Eyemouth’s regeneration

ONGOING support for the regeneration of Eyemouth and Hawick by the Scottish Government’s Infrastructure secretary has been welcomed by South of Scotland MSP Paul Wheelhouse (SNP).

During question time in the Scottish Parliament, Paul asked Cabinet Secretary, Alex Neil MSP, to confirm the support for community-led regeneration of Eyemouth and Hawick. And as well as confirming the support Alex Neil also offered to meet Scottish Borders Council and relevant agencies to identify what more can be done to help regeneration in the region.

Paul said;“Alex Neil recognises the challenges facing many communities in the South of Scotland and in particular the work needing done in Eyemouth and Hawick.

“A recent study by the Scottish Agricultural College identified these two towns are being amongst the ten most vulnerable to public sector job losses. It is, therefore, my aim to minimise the impact this could have in the area given the economic potential for both Eyemouth and Hawick.

“European Fisheries Fund and Coastal Communities Fund money offer opportunities to diversify the Eyemouth and district economy.

“I have witnessed first-hand the community led regeneration work started in Eyemouth over the past six months through the Eyemouth and District Initiative group and am delighted that the Cabinet Secretary has offered to come down to the Borders and have this important meeting with the council and agencies.

“I know the newly formed council administration in the Scottish Borders, in which SNP colleagues are key players, will welcome this opportunity to meet with the Cabinet Secretary and I look forward to taking an active role in ensuring the regeneration of Eyemouth and Hawick.”

The Eyemouth and District Initiative Group (TEADIG) have been working with other organisations such as the community council, Eyemouth & St Abbs Voluntary Marine Reserve, Herring Queen Committee, Chamber of Trade etc.
