NHS Borders staff have received praise from Michael Matheson MSP in response to the findings of the health board’s annual review but the Minister for Public Heatlth has also identified areas where improvements can be made

The review highlighted NHS Borders good performance in a number of areas including successfully delivering the 28 weeks referrral to treatment target; bettering the national average with regard to waiting times and achieving all financial targets for 2011/12, significantly exceeding the Scottish Government’s efficiency target of 3%.

In a letter recently received by NHS Borders chair, John Raine, Mr Matheson said: “I would pass on my thanks to you and your team for a constructive and informative Annual Review. It is clear that the Board is making significant progress in taking forward a challenging agenda on a number of fronts including improving access, maintaining tight financial control and driving forward the Quality agenda.

“However I have been assured that you are not complacent and you recognise that there remains much to do. The Board must maintain a clear focus on its financial position and ensure that progress on your health improvement and health care provision commitments is maintained.”

The action points given to the Board by the Minister to achieve in the future include: sustaining performance again all HEAT (national) targets; maintaining focus on the delivery of waiting time standards; ensuring there are robust plans in place to meet the Health Improvement Efficiency, Access and Treatment (HEAT) standards for Dementia Diagnosis in March 2013 and continuing to review, update and maintain robust arrangements for controlling Healthcare Associated Infections.
