Funding boost for NHS Borders

In line with other health boards across Scotland, NHS Borders is to see its funding increase over the next three years.

The board will benefit from a slice of £8,802 billion in revenue funding, with its share broken down to £170.7 million for 2012/3- a boost of 2.2%; £175.4 million in 2013/14 (2.8%) and £179.8 million in 2014/5 (2.5%).

The good news for health boards north of the border came on the same day that Westminster Health Secretary Andrew Lansley was greeted by protesters opposed to his changes to the English NHS, as he arrived to give a speech at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.

Welcoming the funding for NHS Borders and addressing the situation in England, Paul Wheelhouse MSP commented: “The contrast with what’s happening to the NHS in Scotland as compared to south of the border could not be greater.

“While we see the SNP’s Nicola Sturgeon delivering a funding package for NHS Borders that the Scottish Parliament’s Health committee has acknowledged as being extremely generous in the context of a reduced block grant from Westminster, the story is very different for health boards in England.

“The SNP is fully committed to protecting our NHS as a public service and to maintaining investment in frontline health services.”

While territorial health boards with receive a portion of £7,761 billion, investment will also be made in other projects- for example, £21.6 million will be invested to support the transfer of prison healthcare services to the NHS, and a further £10 million will help support the Adult Social Care Change Fund, which involves working with local authorities on the redesign of health and social care services.
