A VISION for Winterfield Park in Dunbar has been unveiled to link in with the John Muir Coast to Coast Trail which is due to open in 2014.

Sue Anderson of the Friends of Winterfield Park said the new route, connecting the birthplace of the conservationist John Muir in Dunbar with Helensburgh on the Firth of Clyde, would run along the northern boundary of the site.

“I think it is really exciting that this new coast to coast trail is going to be opened up, comparable in stature to the West Highland Way and with lots of potential for bringing income into the area. It is a real opportunity for Dunbar and to give people another reason to visit our town liked they used to.”

She added: “I feel we have an opportunity to make it a destination town again. John Muir was a man of vision and I would like to think Dunbar was a town of vision too. I like the idea that we would possibly set the standard of excellence for the coast to coast trail as a lot of coast to coast walkers are going to start here.”

Mrs Anderson said the promenade was deteriorating and very exposed to storm damage in some parts. She also raised concern that the pavilion could remain an “eyesore” for walkers and suggested that parts of the “iconic” building could be used and adapted, something new could be built or it could be taken down.

She said funding sources, in cash and kind, could include Lafarge which could donate cement to repair the path as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations and sportscotland’s Legacy 2014 Active Places Fund for footpaths and natural play areas such as a putting green.

Urging the community council to support the formation of a task force to progress the plan, she said the pavilion area could be used for the community and to enhance the walkers experience, with toilets and a seasonal cafe provided.
