Fortnightly bin collections to start next month

FORTNIGHTLY weekly bin collections will be starting in the Borders on November 1, 2010.

Most households are now using their blue recycling bins that were delivered earlier this year, plus their general waste bins and garden waste bins, but those who have nowhere to store them can request bags from the council as an alternative.

Reporting to councillors last week, Scottish Borders Council's waste strategy manager said: "We anticipate that the transition to alternate weekly collections to take place from November 1, 2010, should be fairly painless and easy for the majority of householders in the Borders, particularly if the guidance and information provided to householders is followed (eg squash and compress as much as you can into your bins, recycle as much as you can, flatpack large cardboard boxes and place them beside recycling bins for collection).

"Nevertheless we anticipate that it may take some time for this advice to become second nature to householders and accordingly expect that we may receive a significant number of calls/enquiries or complaints about the new service.

"With this in mind we have produced a 'Waste Collection Guidance' document for SBC which we wish to be approved and endorsed by council."

Over the next few weeks households across the region will be given details of their new rubbish collection times and days in a co-ordinated information campaign by the council which will include newspaper adverts, radio adverts and information to individual housholds.

Residents will have to make themselves aware of the various rules and regulations - such as not putting out waste beside wheeled bins except on certain occasions such as at Chrismtas time; and not leaving bin lids more than half open - where a bin lid is partly open it may or may not be collected

As well as being a money saving exercise it is also part of the council's 'Towards Zero Waste' strategy in order to meet European and Scottish Government targets for landfill diversion and recycling, minise landfill costs and landfill tax and prevent future fines.
