A TYPICAL afternoon of playing with toys turned out to be a bit more dramatic for three-year-old Josh McNaughton on Saturday after he got his foot stuck in a table.

Josh was in the living room in his family’s house in The Rookery, near Grantshouse, when he somehow managed to get his foot stuck in the cupholder of a Thomas the Tank Engine table.

It wasn’t the first time he’d done this but unlike on other occasions, there was no budging Josh’s foot.

His mum, Lorna and grandma Susan tried all they could to free the little boy’s limb but after having no luck, contacted the Fire Brigade.

A crew from Eyemouth came to the rescue and their presence and an ice lolly were enough to keep Josh happy while they got to work - eventually managing to free the toddler’s foot with some Fairy washing up liquid.

Relieved mum Lorna told ‘The Berwickshire News’: “He’d put his foot through the cup hole a few times before but always managed to get it back out but his foot had obviously grown a bit and it was completely stuck.

“Josh panicked a bit at first until we told him Fireman Sam was coming to see him and he’d get to see a fire engine.

“Before they arrived we tried putting soap on his foot but it didn’t work. It was a bit embarassing but a relief when the washing up liquid did the trick. We thought they might have had to saw a bit of the table off.

“I don’t know whether I should write to the manufacturers of the table as they shouldn’t be marketing it for children if this is going to happen. Josh can’t be the only kid that’s done this.

“He was sitting on the arm of the sofa when it happened and I was scared that if he fell forward more of his leg would get stuck.”
