Eyemouth shows off its green scheme
THE Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Paul Wheelhouse MSP, visited Eyemouth on Monday to see one of Scotland’s greenest homes.
The Minister was the guest of the Mykura family, who showed him how adopting a range of renewable technologies, including two wind turbines, a ground source heat pump and solar photovoltaic (solar PV) panels has made their house a greener place to live.
The Mykuras are part of the ever-growing Green Homes Network which is funded by the Scottish Government and managed by the Energy Saving Trust. It currently consists of 660 members and 122 homes in South East Scotland.
William Mykura, along with wife Jill and their two daughters, Edith and Kitty, wanted to reduce their energy bills and help the environment. They began their project in 2005 by fitting a ground source heat pump before adding two wind turbines in 2009 and finally adding solar PV panels in 2010.
William explained: “The decision to install renewable systems was a combination of environmental and financial reasons. We began to renovate our home so it seemed sensible to invest in renewables. We were attracted by the prospect of saving money on our energy bills, particularly electricity.
“It was a large investment, but it is going to save us money long-term, and the cost will be recovered in approximately 10 years .”
The Minister commented after his visit: ““This is an excellent example of a household working hard to improve its energy efficiency, generating its own energy, cutting bills and helping our environment.”
