Eyemouth pupils are Resilent Communities pioneers

S6 students at Eyemouth High School have been working with Eyemouth Community Council to promote Scottish Borders Council's (SBC) Resilient Communities project.

PUPILs at Eyemouth High led the way for youngsters nationwide last week when they staged a Resilient Communities presentation at their school.

The group of S6 students presented their promotional DVD to their S6 colleagues, local community representatives and other interested bodies, becoming the first set of youngsters to showcase their resilient communities approach in the whole of Scotland.

Their presentation was

essentially a recruitment drive to get local people involved with the scheme and be on hand to deal with issues such as heavy snow, fires and flooding and headteacher Dave Watson said he was incredibly proud of how the students went about their task.

“We’re always looking for opportunities for our young people to get involved in wider activities in line with the new Curriculum of Excellence and resilient

communities was exactly that.

“If we can get our young people involved in this kind of activity the school can really invest in our local community.

“In a place like Eyemouth community volunteers are vital. Take winter for example; primary routes are a priority when it comes to gritting so volunteers are crucial for helping to clear minor roads, paths and blocked entrances.

“The feedback the pupils had after their presentation was not only heartwarming for them but the whole of the school.”

So impressive was the S6 pupils’ presentation that they have been invited it present it to MSPs at the Scottish Parliament next month.
