Eyemouth first place in Scotland to receive training from Royal Life Saving Society

FOLLOWING the tragic events of June 4 this year when young Katie-Lou MacLean was injured after being swept into the sea both residents and councillors have been keen to improve water safety in Eyemouth and the wheels were put into motion on Tuesday when the town became the first place in Scotland to have volunteers trained by the Royal Life Saving Society.
The event, held at Eyemouth Fire Station, attracted people of all ages and as part of their water safety training volunteers werre shown how to throw lifelines correctly and safely and also given a number of theoretical lessons.
Hailing the day a great success, Jim Fraser, SBC’s Emergency Planning Officer said: “Scottish Borders Council, through or resilient communities initiative, organised this water safety training in Eyemouth in partnership with Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service, The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and The Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS).
“It means Eyemouth is now the first area in Scotland to have community volunteers trained by the RLSS.
“The purpose of this half-day session was to assist volunteers in the community, so that they are prepared to respond in emergency situations. Fourteen volunteers attended.
“In any given public emergency - members of the public are usually on hand first so we’re really pleased with the response from the people that came along and it was absolutely a worthwhile experience.”
In the wake of Katie-Lou’s accident, residents formed Eyemouth Beach Trust and raised money for a number of life rings along the Bantry.
