Environmental project bags generous wind farm donation

The head of a group dedicated to maintaining the scenic beauty of Berwickshire footpaths has praised the “fantastic” support from a wind farm developer.

Scottish Borders warden Laurie Wood is delighted with the donation from Banks Renewables which will enable the Berwickshire Waste Off Our Footpaths (WOOFS) to buy thousands of branded dog poop scoop bags.

Laurie said: “Nobody likes dog fouling and we want to make sure families, visitors and walkers should not have to endure this unsightly and unpleasant problem while enjoying the network of scenic footpaths in our area.

“We are run entirely by volunteers and through fundraising, so donations from private entities such as Banks Renewables are helping our cause greatly.”

WOOFS is supported by the Berwickshire Community Safety Panel and volunteer members encourage dog owners to clean up after their pets and aim to change attitudes about dog fouling. As part of that they hand out 24,000 free, branded bags to pet owners each month. Since the project launched in July 2011 almost 500 pet owners have signed up a total of 589 dogs to the scheme.

Laurie added: “Out of the various types of anti social behaviour, dog fouling comes high up the list in Berwickshire. WOOFS was set up to tackle this problem and the feedback we have had so far has been very positive from local residents and dog owners.”

Banks Renewables made a donation of £500 to the scheme, which will pay for 50,000 thousand plastic bags to be handed out to dog owners.

The company recently submitted a planning application to Scottish Borders Council for a 14 turbine wind farm to be installed at Quixwood Farm.

Phil Dyke director of Banks Renewables said: “It is important to us that we develop a positive long term relationship with local communities and work in partnership with them to ensure that families and businesses see real, long lasting benefits from their local wind farm.”
