ENVIRONMENTAL enforcement officers are appealing for information after a number of instances of fly-tipping in the area.

Officers are seeking information regarding the illegal tipping of waste in north Northumberland and the Scottish Borders.

Two tips occurred on or around November 15, one in the Ancroft area and one near Paxton. Approximately four tipper loads have been dumped in these two areas. The waste dumped consisted mainly of asbestos tiles and polystyrene.

Councillor Alan Thompson, executive member for neighbourhood services and highways at Northumberland County Council, highlighted the dangers of fly-tipping.

He said: “Fly-tipping harms the environment and is a danger to the public, especially small children. This is especially true when tipping involves asbestos.

“We encourage all residents and businesses to check the credentials of people offering waste disposal services, and would urge anyone with information about this case to come forward.”

Fly-tips of similar materials have been reported in the Scottish Borders. These have been in the Ladykirk, Lamberton and Horndean areas.

Environmental enforcement officers are seeking information regarding both the origins of the waste, and any vehicle or individual seen carrying the waste.

Anyone with any information is asked to please contact Northumberland Council FirstCall on 0845 600 6400. All calls made will be treated in the strictest of confidence.
