AFTER one of the wettest summers on record, Borders sheep farmers might have been hoping for an Indian summer, but they have been denied it by the return of the rain.

Ellemford Show, which was set to be held this weekend (Saturday September 29), was cancelled after flooding at the proposed site, Ellemford’s show field.

The rains of the past week meant that it was simply impossible to countenance the sheep dog trials, handling classes and sheep juding that usually mark the day.

David Morrison, chairman of the organisers, the Lammermoor Pastoral Society, described his disappointment, but conceded that therer was nothing that could be done in the circumstances.

“I was there last Sunday, helping set up the pens and everything, and it looked fine”, he said, “ but if we had had the marquee up then, it wouldn’t still be there now.”

“It’s a real pity, because we are one of those good old traditional hill shows, but there was just no option, especially when health and safety comes into it. We’ll just have to write it off.

David is hopeful that something can be arranged to keep the idea of the show, if not the show itself, in people’s minds for next year.

“I don’t know yet what the committee will decide to do,” he said, but if they can do something like that, they will, because they are a very hard-working committee.

“Unfortunately, you can’t just put it back a week, because that would mean it would start clashing wth sheep sales, and so on and so forth.

“If I remember right, we tried to organise a meal, to hold that instead of the show, but then we had to cancel that in the end due to lack of interest.

“I think the show was last cancelled five or six yeatrs ago, and then the next year when it returned it came back even stronger than it had been, so there is a bit of hope.”
