Duty free wares available at Eyemouth's Mariner's Mayhem event

THE harbour side and vennels of Eyemouth will reverberate to the sound of whispers and muffled footfalls of smugglers again on June 14 from 12 noon to 6pm.

Contraband goods, 'duty free' food and drink, exotic wares – all will be available at Mariners' Mayhem – in celebration of the work of the Eyemouth RNLI lifeboat.

The aim of the day is to raise funds for the work of the local RNLI lifeboat through offering a series of events which recall and celebrate Eyemouth's smuggling heritage. As suggested by the title of the day, a further aim is to have a load of fun and offer visitors and locals an enjoyable and satisfying experience.

As well as water-based events, there will be dramatic re-enactments, music, local food and drinks, 'duty free' goods from the smugglers. There will be a strong focus on events and games for children – competitions, skills challenges, face painting – and maritime skills including rope making.

Also for the children and families Stormy Stan will be present as well as the chance to see round the lifeboat, meet the crew and see a display of the work of local RNLI.

The hope is that the sun will shine to ensure a memorable day and that visiting Eyemouth for the RNLI lifeboat Open Day will become an annual entry in everyone's calendar.
