East Lothian’s MSP Iain Gray took up an invitation from pupils to visit to Dunbar Primary School.

A former physics teacher, he was asked back to the classroom to answer questions by youngsters in P7 who enjoyed an outing to the Scottish Parliament.

The Labour politician took part in a lively question and answer session covering a range of topical issues including whether 16-year-olds should vote in next year’s referendum of Scotland’s future.

He was given a tour of the new school’s Lochend Campus for around 440 P4 to P7 pupils and was impressed by its modern facilities including a dance studio and music room.

The new wood-clad building is on the south side of the east coast railway line to the west of the Hallhill Healthy Living Centre and was selected to encourage children to walk and cycle safely to school. It has 18 classrooms, games and dining halls, and other accommodation.

Mr Gray later said: “The new Lochend Campus at Dunbar Primary School is a building that Dunbar and the whole of East Lothian can be proud of.

“It has state of the art facilities to support the delivery of the wide range of educational opportunities primary schools are now expected to provide.

“It’s also obvious that the children really enjoy making the most of these excellent facilities and are getting more out of their time at school as a result.”
