Devon McNab is Eyemouth's Herring Queen for 2013.

THE date for the 2013 Eyemouth Herring Queen festival is now in the diary and the girl who will lead the celebrations has been chosen.

She is Devon McNab, a third year pupil at Eyemouth High School, who will be installed as the new queen at a ceremony in the town on July 27.

The selection process for a new Herring Queen started at the end of October when Devon, along with all the other candidates, was given a talk in school and a pack containing all the information required to help make the decision as to whether or not she would like to stand for election.

Interested candidates were asked to submit their application along with a CV to the chairperson of the selection panel.

All the girls were interviewed by the panel, who had chosen the questions they wanted to ask. All the candidates were interviewed on the same evening and asked the same set of questions.

They were then given marks for each question, and on the information contained in their CV, by each individual member of the panel. The marks were then added up at the end of the interviews and Devon’s came out on top.  She has chosen Anne Bender, Katie Dyson, Carly Robertson and Erin Robertson as her maids, with lady in waiting Ellen Dougal selected by the Herring Queen committee.

The committee were delighted with the panel’s choice and are now looking forward to putting plans into place for Devon’s crowning and the week-long festival activities.

Newly elected chair Douglas Stewart commented: “The committee are very enthusiastic and are hoping to develop new ideas as well as preserving the traditions which make our festival so special.”
