Council to spend £4.4m on houses

MORE council houses are to be bought back on the open market by East Lothian Council to the tune of £4.4 million.

A total of £230,000 has also been set aside in 2012/13 to fund extensions and loft conversations to help living conditions for families living in overcrowded council houses.

Richard Jennings, head of housing and environment, said 79 houses had been acquired to date through the open market acquisition strategy at a cost of £8.8m.

In order to bring these properties up to the council’s standard, a further £312,643 has been spent on repairs such as lock changes, electrical safety checks and rewires. Kitchen and bathroom replacements have also been carried out, with the final bill expected to be around £500,000.
