Comic Relief money funds Seton Care befriending service

As people across the UK get ready to do their bit for Comic Relief, BHA have been putting the

funding they received from the charity in 2012 to good use.

In August of last year, Seton Care was successful in gaining funding from Comic Relief in order to provide a voluntary befriending service for older people in both Berwickshire and north Northumberland.

Known as the Early Intervention Project, it is funded for three years and aims to encourage local

people to volunteer as befrienders with older people who may be socially isolated or just need a friend.

Early Intervention Co-ordinator, Terri Bearhope, who is running the project commented: “This is a scheme that has been needed in this area for some time and I hope that it will benefit the volunteers as much as the people they will be befriending.

“Everyone involved in the scheme should experience improved physical and mental health, the widening of their social networks, and greater self-confidence.”

Since its beginnings last year, the project has gone from strength to strength. It currently boasts 12 volunteers and was keeping with more requests for the befriending service coming in all the time.

Terri added: “The volunteers are enthusiastic and caring, and more than willing to provide a listening ear or get out and about with someone who is isolated or lonely. Of course, new volunteers are always welcome.”

If anyone is interested in finding out more about the project, they should ring Terri on 01361 884000 or 07801 672167 or take a look at the website, at http://www.setoncare.org.uk/volunteering/befriending.html.
