Colin Leifer named Coldstream’s right-hand man

Newly declared right-hand man Colin Leifer will join Grant Campbell and Liam Wallis as the town's principals for 2013.

Newly declared right-hand man Colin Leifer will join Grant Campbell and Liam Wallis as the town's principals for 2013.

COLIN Leifer has been appointed Coldstream’s right-hand man in waiting for 2013.

He will take his place beside Coldstreamer Grant Campbell and left-hand man Liam Wallis at the 2013 Flodden ride-out and throughout the Borders common riding season.

Colin, 23, follows his father Jim as a Coldstreamer. Jim’s association with Coldstream Civic Week couldn’t be stronger. As well as taking the lead role in 1974, Jim has also served as chairman of Presenting Coldstream for over 20 years. That means Colin fully understands the significance of the opportunity ahead of him. Colin has his own Presenting Coldstream memories already, as a tenor drum player in Coldstream Pipe Band. He is proud to be given the chance to have even more memorable events ahead of him.

Next year’s mounted cavalcade from Coldstream to Flodden field during Coldstream’s Civic Week will have greater importance than usual. Next year is the 500th anniversary of the 1513 Battle of Flodden, and organisers already have preparations well underway.

The announcement of who is the right-hand man is usually made at the April ceremony when the Coldstreamer is officially installed, but as this is usually about six months after the decision has been made by the Ex-Coldstreamers, news has often leaked out before the official announcement.

Acknowledging that the identity of the right-hand man was becoming one of the worst kept secrets in the town, organisers have changed things this year.

After making the decision in recent weeks, the Ex-Coldstreamer’s Association announced the identity of the right hand man at their fundraising coffee morning on Saturday.

Most Coldstream principals carry out a three-year term of office – starting as right-hand man, moving to Coldstreamer in their second year, and left-hand man in their third and final year.
