Coldstream residents back football club’s Home Park plan
COLDSTREAM residents have voted to support a raft of changes to Home Park put forward by the town’s football club.
In a referendum organised by the community council, just over half of all respondents voted to support the club’s planning application to fence off the top pitch and make other alternations to the top pitch and pavilion.
There were 400 votes of support overall, and 340 of opposition to the plans amounting to 43.04%
The result will form the community council’s submission to Scottish Borders Council, who will make a decision on the club’s planning application.
Club officials have submitted a planning application to upgrade facilities at Home Park in order to retain full membership of the Scottish Football Association.
Full membership around £7,000 a year and allows Coldstream to participate in the early rounds of the Scottish Cup. But the club has warned that those and other benefits will be lost if it does not make the necessary improvements in the next three years.
Among a raft of improvements needed, the club wants to erect a permanent two-metre-high perimeter fence round the top pitch, creating the image of an enclosed and secure football ground on match days.
It hopes to start the work next summer, when the football season ends, and complete it all by 2015.
Coldstream and District Community Council decided that as the park was gifted to the town by the Earl of Home in the early 20th century for recreational and sports purposes, all residents on the electoral roll should be given the opportunity to have their views heard.
