Chirnside’s Amy recovering at home after being struck by a car
A CHIRNSIDE girl who was hospitalised in Newcastle with severe head and leg injuries after being hit by a car in Berwick is making a good recovery and is now back home.
Thirteen-year-old Amy Clark was pulled from beneath a car in the Tweedmouth Retail Park and taken to hospital by helicopter just before 2pm on Saturday, November 3.
Local ambulance crews initially began treating her at the scene, after some concerned passers-by had attempted to lift the vehicle off her.
With the air ambulance not able to land in the car park on a busy shopping afternoon, Amy was treated on the scene for leg and pelvic injuries, before undergoing further treatment as she was rushed to Berwick Ambulance Station, on the nearby Tweedmouth Trading Estate.
There, the Great North Air Ambulance helicopter was able to land and pick her up and transport her in a special brace to prevent any worsening of her injuries in transit.
A GNAA doctor was able to treat her further, for a fractured skull and a very deep gash in her leg, as she was flown to the new emergency department at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle, in just 20 minutes.
There, she was put into an induced coma. Amy then came out of that coma and was doing well enough by Tuesday night for doctors to allow her to be discharged.
Amy, a keen amateur actress, is set to star as Cinderella in Duns and District Amateur Dramatic Society’s pantomime early next month.
Several of her friends and colleagues in the society took to Facebook and other social media to wish Amy the best in her recovery, and to remind her she was in their thoughts as they rehearsed.
The writer and producer of ‘Cinderella’, Euan McIver, described on Facebook how everyone in the society was “bearing up at rehearsal under such difficult circumstances.”
He went on: “I said to everyone tonight, when they go home, to please just spare a few moments’ thought for Amy and her family.
“But now we can bear in mind the great news - Amy is making a good recovery.”
All being well after her ordeal, Amy will be able to rejoin the pantomime - which is being adapted so as to accommodate her continued recovery - as soon as next Monday.
