Call for action on Dunbar route
Action is being taken to re-open a disused underpass beneath the rail line at Dunbar amidst safety concerns about children crossing the railway as a short cut to school.
Michael Veitch, a local councillor and East Lothian Council’s cabinet spokesperson for transport, has written to Justine Greening MP, Secretary of State for Transport, to seek her department’s help in efforts to find a solution to the problem.
He highlighted worries that youngsters were crossing the railway as a short cut to the new primary school campus at Lochend and the need to re-open the Ash Grove underpass.
Mr Veitch said: “There is understandable frustration locally at the lack of connectivity between the new Lochend campus and the communities on the north side of the railway, despite being only a very short distance apart.
“There is also anxiety about children seeing the railway as the obvious short cut to the school.
“The priority now is for the council, Network Rail and the various bodies involved to examine possible solutions and that is why I have today written to the Transport Secretary in an effort to secure maximum support.”
