Borders woman is new Chief Superintendent

A BORDERS woman has been appointed as the new Chief Superintendent for the Lothians and Scottish Borders.
In her new role, Jeanette McDiarmid will take charge of an area stretching from Harthill in West Lothian to the Scottish Border and including four local authority areas.
Chief Supt McDiarmid, who most recently has been the Lothian and Borders Police Divisional Commander for West Lothian, has been appointed by Police Scotland Chief Constable Stephen House following consultation with West Lothian, East Lothian, Midlothian and Scottish Borders Councils.
She said: “I feel privileged to have been given this opportunity to play a key part in the new era of policing in Scotland. Tackling crime, keeping people safe and building confidence will be at the heart of everything The Lothians and Scottish Borders Division stands for.
“I am passionate about the benefits of focussed local policing and will be working closely with the communities to identify and address their concerns through the local policing plans - there will be a specific plan for every council ward area.”
Chief Supt McDiarmid, who resides in the Borders, and is married with two teenage children, transferred to Lothian and Borders Police from the Metropolitan Police in 2005. She initially took charge of the Force’s major crime portfolio before being appointed Head of Special Branch. In 2008, she moved to West Lothian Division as Deputy Commander before taking over the Division in 2010. She was instrumental in creating the West Lothian Community Safety Unit and believes strongly in integrated partnership working.
Jeanette began her career in policing by joining the British Transport Police in 1987 before being transferred to Metropolitan Police working mainly in CID and latterly specialised in the investigation of serial rape, kidnap and homicide for the Specialist Crime Directorate.
In 2005 she was transferred to Lothian and Borders Police and appointed lead on major crime and homicide before being appointed Head of Special Branch, including responsibility for counter terrorism .
Chief Supt McDiarmid was appointed Deputy Divisional Commander for West Lothian in 2008 and two years later she was appointed Divisional Commander for West Lothian.
Police Scotland will be the new single police service for Scotland from April 1.
The Chief Supt added: “As this period of transition towards Police Scotland continues, I can assure my communities that my officers and staff will continue to provide a quality service, working with our partners to protect and look after them.”
