Borders to host packed schedule of cycling events

THE number of cycling events held in the Borders is expected to reach a record high this year.

Following the successful hosting of a stage of the Tour of Britain for the third time in 2012, the region’s road cycling reputation is continuing to soar and local cycling organisations are developing a packed events programme that showcases the diversity of road cycling options in the area.

Highlights in the coming months will include the Newcastleton Cycling Festival (April 5-7), Borders Ciclista (May 11/12) and the Tweedlove Cycling Festival (May 25 - June 2).

The Tour o’ the Borders will also make a welcome return to the Borders sportives calendar on April 14. Featuring a choice of two routes - 49 miles and 70 miles - it will take place on quiet roads with tough climbs and great views.

Neen Kelly recreational cycling officer for the Borders said: “There is a busy and varied cycling events programme set to get underway in the Scottish Borders from the Spring. Local cycling groups have been making a brilliant effort to put on events that demonstrate what this area can offer and this year’s programme is shaping up to be the best ever.”

The increasing numbers of catalogued cycling routes throughout the Borders region is also playing a role in bringing more cyclists to the area.

Neen added: ”We unveiled yet more new routes at the end of 2012 including the BorderLoop4, a set of brilliant circulars that enable the epic 250 mile BorderLoop to be tackled in more manageable chunks. Our hope is that the fantastic variety of routes now available to cyclists combined with both competitive and social cycling events will put the Borders at the top of road cyclists’ favourite destinations this year.”
