Borders Talking Newspaper milestone
BORDERS Talking Newspaper is turning to music to celebrate another milestone.
Last year the charity celebrated its 1000th weekly edition of audio news for the visually impaired by producing a CD of music and readings from the region.
Next month, as it celebrates its 21st birthday, BTN is joining with Scottish Borders Africa Aids Group (SBAAG) to raise funds by promoting a concert by the Andante Chamber Choir in Kelso Old Church, at 7.30pm on March 16.
And, as with their Sounds of the Borders CD, it will be a mixture of music and readings. Local poet Arthur Parsons will be reading some of his own poems with added assistance from Mike Young.
Along with Parsons and Young the Andante choir will take the audience through “A Choral Calendar: A Year in Song and Verse” from September’s Fields of Gold by Gordon Sumner which ends with a rousing finale of the March of the Men of Harlech.
Admission is by programme either in advance or on the door at £10 each to include a glass of wine.
The event will be one of the last before the choir takes on one of its most prestigious concerts to date with a visit to St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh in April.
Proceeds will be split between Borders Talking Newspaper and SBAAG, which was formed in 2002 by Dr Dorothy Logie and friends after her husband Dr Sandy Logie died from AIDS, contracted while working in a Zambian hospital.
SBAAG founded a clinic in memory of Dr Logie at the hospital where he worked. They now help increase understanding of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and its devastating social, educational and health effects in Africa and to identify and support projects which help those affected by AIDs.
Prior to the concert they will be holding a coffee morning in Bowden Village Hall on March 2.
Borders Talking Newspaper raises money to fund the free service which it offers to the visually impaired throughout the area.
One part-time member of staff is assisted by many volunteers in selecting, reading, recording and sending out audio extracts of news from the local newspapers on memory sticks. They also provide special machines for their listeners.
In addition they produce quarterly magazines featuring a variety of items of local interest, and will be recording extracts from the concert.
