Borders carers recognised at launch of new strategy

CARERS of all ages gathered to speak about their caring experiences and the support they receive at the launch of a new strategy, Caring Together in the Scottish Borders.

The event was an opportunity to hear about the successes of the Young Carers Strategy, which has been running for the last two years. The aim is for young carers to be supported, and “allowed to be children and young people first and foremost”.

There are an estimated 12,500 adult carers in the Scottish Borders, and around 1,350 young carers, aged under 18.

Around 10 per cent of the region’s population provides care to another person and three out of five people will be a carer at some point in their lives.

The aim of the local strategies, developed by a partnership of Scottish Borders Council, NHS Borders, the Borders Carers Centre, Action for Children and the Borders Voluntary Community Care Forum, is to identify carers and ensure that a range of information, advice and support is available to them.

The launch was attended by Councillor Frances Renton, Scottish Borders Council’s executive member for social work, and Councillor Sandy Aitchison, executive member for education.
