OUTER Mongolia and Berwickshire might be very different in most respects but one thing that unites the two locations is a passion for quilting so it seems apt that the ladies of local SWRI groups have created their own quilt to raise money for a centre in the central Asian country.

The idea of creating of a quilt to offer as a prize in a

fundraising raffle was that of Duns’ Ruth de la Haye who travelled to Outer Mongolia to complete a journalism internship after graduating from university.

During her time in the country Ruth became aware of the New Way Life Mongolian Quilting Centre, set up to give a new

service to poor people in Mongolia, teaching them

patchwork and quilting, and providing a centre for this activity.

The target groups are poor, unemployed, single and

widowed women, disabled women, orphanage children and children with special needs.

On returning home from her placement Ruth was keen to do something for the centre and first put the idea to a number of SWRI members at a meeting in autumn last year.

Many of those who attended were keen to contribute to the quilt and five months on the ladies of Cockburnspath, Chirnside, Duns, Langton and Abbey St Bathans SWRIs can now admire their efforts as the quilt is ready to be raffled at a quilt show in Preston Village Hall on Saturday, April 6, with the winner drawn at 3pm.

The quilting side of things was overseen by Beverley Clyne of Abbey St Bathans SWRI who said as well as contributing to a worthwhile cause, creating the quilt was a great way of bringing people together.

“For some people it was the first time they’d do any quilting but already they’re thinking of ideas for another one,” she told ‘The Berwickshire’.

“We wanted to include things that represented Berwickshire so there’s a seagull, boats, salmon and a shepherd’s crook amongst other things. We’ve also included the Mongolian flag.”

Raffle tickets are available from ruth.delahaye@gmail.com or from Betty Snow on 01361 883434.
