Berwickshire’s village halls take the spotlight at St Abbs

IF as a member of a village hall committee you find yourself asking questions such as ‘how do we motivate the community?’ or ‘where do we go to for funds?’ then a special event at St Abbs could be just what you are looking for.

Berwickshire Federation of Village Halls (BFVH) and Berwickshire Association of Voluntary Service are joining forces to run the event where people running village halls across Berwickshire can share ideas, find out information and receive support.

Based in the newly refurbished St Abbs Community Centre the day - Saturday, September 29 - starts at 10am with the federation’s AGM, followed by an introduction to their new website and brochure that both promote Berwickshire halls.

A demonstration of the new website and online toolkit facility will also be given to those interested in finding out more.

A practical advice panel follows, dealing with topics such as ‘What to do when things go wrong?’ and ‘Motivating your community’. The schedule is then wrapped-up with two smaller discussion groups, one on ‘How to make an impression’ or ‘What do funders want?’.

The day as a whole will also be a great opportunity to see the newly-refurbished St Abbs Community Centre which opened recently following a £300,000 refit that was assisted by grant support including one from BFVH.

Federation membership currently stands at 25 Berwickshire village or community halls, embracing almost every community in the county, hosting a wide spectrum of local activities.

The federation acts as an umbrella body for these halls, with a committee made up of hall representatives.

In addition to organising information events and producing publicity material, the federation administers a grant scheme to support halls, and draws on its experience to provide advice to hall operators.

Anyone interested in attending this useful and popular event should visit the federation website – www.berwickshirehalls.org.uk – or alternatively phone the BAVS office on 01361 883137 by Friday, September 28.
