Berwick set to get extra trains

MORE trains are calling at Berwick on the new rail timetable which came into effect on Monday.

Two additional southbound trains on weekday mornings and an earlier northbound Sunday train are now provided.

East Coast spokesman John Gelson said: “We’re delighted to have been able to introduce two additional southbound trains from Berwick to London on Monday to Friday, departing from Berwick at 09.11 and 11.11. We’ve also introduced an extra northbound service to Edinburgh on Sunday mornings, departing Berwick at 09.59.

“The new services from Berwick provide an enhanced range of direct and connecting journey opportunities, and we’re sure they will prove popular with travellers in the Borders and north Northumberland.”

The first northbound Sunday train on the previous timetable did not leave Berwick until 11.09.

Berwick MP Sir Alan Beith said: “I welcome the additional fast trains to York and London. This is an improvement promised in meetings I had with rail managers two years ago to be implemented when operational difficulties could be overcome, and I am very pleased this has now been done.”
