Ayton woman one of two drink drivers caught as campaign continues

An Ayton woman was one of only two drivers caught drink driving by police in the Borders during the second week of their annual crackdown on drivers who get behind the wheel whilst under the influence.

A spokesperson for Lothian and Borders Police confirmed that at 12.45am on Sunday, December 16, a 30 year-old local woman was stopped and found to be over the limit whilst driving in Ayton.

A report on the incident has since been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal and the woman is due to appear in court in January. The only other offender caught in the Borders was a 47 year old-man from St Boswells who is also due to appear in court early in the new year.

The second week of the nationwide campaign against drink and drug drivers saw the number of motorists found to be under the influence in the region drop by half. In week one four motorists were arrested and charged, most notably Dutch holidaymaker Willem Benedic, 59, who was reported to police after driving across a man’s lawn in Cove
before colliding with a garden wall.

Selkirk Sheriff Court heard that Benedic had been turned away from the man’s house after mistaking it for a hotel.

He was banned from driving for 15 months, fined £300 and ordered to forfeit his Honda Civic car.

A total of 79 drivers were found to be flouting the law nationwide in week two of the police crackdown, by being drunk behind the wheel and a further six were detected under the influence of drugs.

Police are appealing to the
public to report anyone they suspect of driving while under the influence by contacting their local police station, dialling 999 or calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
