ATYTON Local History Society has produced a new booklet that has an eclectic mix of the writings of villagers from different eras.

T Ramsay Turner was born in Ayton in 1904 and lived all his life in the village.

A builder by trade and a long standing elder of the kirk he was involved for many years with the annual flower show. Music was his passion and he was a talented writer who recorded much of what was going on around him as well as his memories which has helped in recording the history of the village during the 20th century.

Some of his writing was published by Ayton Primary School in the 1990s and this latest T Ramsay Turnerst booklet expands on the school’s publication, and includes chapters on the Volunteer Hall, Netherbyres Mill, School Memories and Bidding the Toon - the custom of informing residents of funeral arrangements in the village.

As well as Ramsay’s work the new booklet has a section by an unknown author entitled ‘Happy Childhood - Reminiscence of 1876’.

These reminiscences talk about visits to the local gas works where John the Gas would tell ghost stories to the children.

The booklet also includes the “Whoopers O’ Ayton” by local poet Robert Mennon and photographs of Ayton dating from the 1880s to the 1960s.

The booklet costs £3 and is available from Dalgetty House, opposite the clocktower in Ayton: telephone 018907 81427; or e-mail bill@black50.fsworld.co.uk. It can also be posted for £1 extra.
